With sports being the biggest attraction and an age old tradition in the country, South Africa is a perfect holiday destination for contemporary sports enthusiasts. Boasting an array of amazing sports, both traditional and modern ones, this Rainbow Nation has enough to excite a sports fan.
South Africa boasts over 450 affiliated golf clubs of which a number of world class golf courses each in their own unique setting, from fairways in the bush where wildlife roam freely, to the greens of the coast where welcoming breezes blow off the ocean and makes every round different.
Golf South Africa can be split into four key areas of the country, with the largest concentration of courses being around the Johannesburg golf area with over 25 courses within 30 minutes’ drive from Johannesburg and the adjacent Sun City with traditional tree-lined layouts and luxurious golf resorts.
To the southeast lies the KwaZulu Natal region and main urban centre of Durban, with a mix of parkland and links style courses and a destination that is the most underrated of all the places to potentially golf in South Africa.
The golf seasons in Johannesburg offers year round golfing, but often you will have to navigate thunderstorms during the summer months from December to February. Durban experiences a similar weather pattern with drier winter months from June through September and a raining season during the hot summer months.
The Western Cape is the crown jewel of golf in South Africa with many highly-ranked facilities situated around Cape Town, the surrounding wine lands region of Stellenbosch and the Garden Route which stretches over 300 kilometres (known as the South Africa golf coastline) with its world class courses around Mossel Bay, George and Knysna where you will be treated to the country's most picturesque links-style golf South Africa has to serve up, which challenges all golfers.
The golf seasons in Cape Town and the Garden Route are the opposite. The summer brings dry and warm temperatures perfect for golfing in contrast to the winter months which are damp with daytime temperature hovering around 18 degrees Celsius. The coastal regions are also going to naturally experience more humidity than inland courses.
