Penina is one of the great resort golf courses and was the first to be built in the Algarve. Designed by the late Sir Henry Cotton, who also lived here for many years, Penina has hosted numerous Portuguese Opens, most recently in 2006.
The course has some distinct characteristics. Pine and Eucalyptus trees line the fairways, which are entirely flat as the land was originally paddy fields. The course also has an unusual configuration of holes, with four of the par 5's being on the back nine, producing a front nine par 35 and back nine par 38.
The course also has one of the finest practice facilities in the Algarve, with a seventy bay driving range (12 are covered) with practice bunker, chipping area and large putting green. It's an ideal venue for Professionals wanting to take groups for a golf school holiday.

The par 3 13th is its signature hole with a lake bordering the right hand side. Penina is a very enjoyable course to play, and great for those who prefer to walk, although buggies are available.
